The Invisible Labor
A Multicultural Group Exhibit Featuring 19 Mothers, Caregivers, and Nurturers
Co-curated by Christine Mitchell Adams + Tina Picz
Firefolk Arts, Waitsfield, VT | September 23 - November 1, 2023, during gallery hours.
Through a variety of material exploration, these artists attempt to communicate visualize, and validate the invisible labor of care in birth, community, and death.
There is a dichotomy between providing care for others and providing care for oneself. Sense of self and identity is lost within the folds of providing care for those we love and we often lose touch with our own bodies, minds, and emotional needs. Yet, so often, self-care is given the least priority or is labeled as “selfish.”
The work of this diverse group of artists elicits prompts for us to explore what it means to each of us to nurture. The definition of the verb, to nurture, is: care for and encourage the growth or development of. While we foster and tend to the growth of others, how do we also tend to our own growth? How can the act of nurturing—others and ourselves—strengthen us?
